Pre-licensing
Four easy steps to the licensing process:
- Step 1: Prelicensing course: take approved course offered through certified Education Providers like Ignite School of Real Estate; pass the end-of-course exam.
- Step 2: Background check: before submitting license application, order online at NCRECCHECK.com; vendor will provide report to the North Carolina Real Estate Commission (NCREC)
- Step 3: License application: online application at NCREC.gov; pairs with background check; $100 application fee; receive Notice of Exam Eligibility.
- Step 4: License examination: schedule testing appointment with Pearson VUE; score 75 on both the National and State section within the 180 day exam eligibility period.

Tuition for Broker Prelicensing Courses is $475 and includes all materials necessary for course completion including online learning management system, presentation slides, worksheets, quizzes, midterm, and review examinations. Materials for the course will all be administered in electronic format via online learning platform. Access to the online learning platform will be granted in advance of the course such that students have adequate time to prepare and print hard copy of any materials they deem personally necessary. A hard copy of the textbook can be purchased at an additional charge.
You will need to schedule study time outside of the classroom. Make sure that you are reading material ahead of each class, engage during the class, ask questions, and study after each class. There are mandatory quizzes and a midterm to help you stay on track. You can do it!
Students in an in-person or synchronous distance learning Broker Prelicensing Course must attend a minimum of 90% of all scheduled instructional hours. Attendance for in-person courses will be documented each day based on the physical attendance and attention of the student. Attendance for synchronous distance courses shall be based on the student’s being on camera, interacting appropriately with the instructor and other students, and participating in required activities. Course monitors will maintain contact with synchronous students to ensure adequate attendance monitoring. Though you can ask your instructor for the information that you missed during an absence, you are not able to make up hours in another course. There is no such thing as an excused absence.
A student may withdraw from a course by giving written notice to the Education Provider prior to the start of the course. In such event, the student will have the following options: students who withdraw prior to the start of the course shall have the option to:
- move their registration to any future course of the same type within 6 months;
- receive a full credit equal to the cost of their enrollment to be used toward other courses; or
- request a full refund (please note refunds may be reduced by the cost of materials already received by the student).
A student who terminates enrollment in a course either with written notice to the Education Provider or by no longer attending a course on or after the first day of the course has been held will not be entitled to a refund of any portion of paid Tuition.
Instructors will hold weekly office hours online to help answer student questions outside the classroom. Students can always reach out to the instructor via email as well.
Post-licensing
All provisional brokers must satisfy the Postlicensing education requirement of 90 classroom hours (three 30-hour classes) to be eligible for active broker license status. Postlicensing education is a one-time requirement and must be complete within 18 months of license issue date. The Postlicensing classes consist of POST 301 (Brokerage Relationships and Responsibilities); POST 302 (Contracts and Closing); and POST 303 (NC Law, Rules, and Legal Concepts).
Provisional brokers must complete three 30-hour postlicensing courses within 18 months of licensure to have their provisional status removed. To complete each course the student must meet the class attendance requirement, complete all required homework, and pass the end of course exam.
Tuition for Broker Postlicensing courses is $225 for each course and includes all materials necessary for course completion including online learning management system, presentation slides, worksheets, quizzes, midterm and review examinations. Students will need to provide verification that they have access to the current edition of the North Carolina Real Estate Manual as required. Materials for the course will all be administered in electronic format via online learning platform.
Provisional brokers need to bring a copy (digital or printed) of their pocket card issued by North Carolina Real Estate Commission. In class, you will be required to have the North Carolina Real Estate Manual and note taking materials. If you do not have the North Carolina Real Estate Manual, you can purchase it before class online from the North Carolina Real Estate Commission’s website.

Continuing Education
Continuing Education is a recurring annual requirement for all licensees wishing to maintain active license status eligibility and must be completed each license period by June 10th beginning with the first full annual license period after initial licensure. Each licensee is required to take the appropriate 4-hour Update course (BICUP for BIC-eligible and BIC designated and GENUP for provisional brokers and brokers) and a 4-hour elective of your choice.
Licensees must attend 90% of a CE course and comply with student participation standards in order to receive credit for the course. Early departures from CE courses delivered in-person or via synchronous distance learning are prohibited by Rule 58A .1705. Students who depart courses early will not receive course credit.
Attendance will be closely monitored, including late arrivals and early departures from class sessions and from all scheduled breaks, during in-person and synchronous distance learning courses. All time missed will be recorded for each student by the course instructor or course monitor/moderator.
Starting prior to the second renewal of your real estate license continuing education must be completed each annual license period between July 1 and June 10. It is very important to note that schools are not permitted to offer courses for CE credit between June 11 and June 30 of each year.
